A round of betting begins after each player receives their two hole cards. The first player to act has the option of saying ‘check’ which means they are willing to call any bets made by other players. If they choose to raise their bet the other players must either match it or raise it again. If they raise their bet again and no one else calls their bet they must fold their hand.
Once the players have decided how to play their hands a third card is dealt face up on the table, these are known as community cards and anyone can use them to form a poker hand of five. A fourth card is then dealt face up called the river. A final round of betting then takes place.
To win the pot the player with the best poker hand of five must cover all bets made in each round including the mandatory antes and blinds. This is usually referred to as the Showdown. The best poker hands include Straights (cards of consecutive rank), Three of a Kind, and Two Pair. Observe experienced poker players and analyze their strategies to learn from their mistakes. The more you study experienced players the faster and better you will become.
